Musky Mayhem Tackle Rabid Squirrel Lure Review

Don’t let the name scare you, the Rabid Squirrel from Musky Mayhem won’t bite you or your pocketbook, but let me assure you that it will put some muskies in your net.

I feel that most musky anglers would take a glimpse at the Rabid Squirrel from Musky Mayhem Tackle and think it’s a just rather scantly adored bucktail, but I can assure you they are missing the proverbial boat on this lure. While the Rabid Squirrel might look overly simple or underwhelming to the uninformed, it is a muskie catching machine.

Musky Mayhem while synonymous with flashabou adorned double and single bladed bucktails recognized the need for not only alternative skirting materials but also the power that their smaller profiles can provide. The rabid squirrel is a top tier of musky lure design as the alternative skirting simultaneously reduces the lures over all visual profile, increases its running depth but still maintains serious thump and vibration.

While Musky Mayhem classic like the Cowgirl and Showgirl rule the roost when it comes to musky bucktails, the Rabid Squirrel is ready to leap into action when other bucktail aren’t getting the job done. The Rabid Squirrel is a phenomenal presentation on highly pressured waters where muskies see and feel typically adored flashabou musky bucktails with great regularly. This makes the Rabid Squirrel a standout choice for anglers fishing popular metropolitan waters or other popular musky fishing destinations where bucktails hit the water like rain during the weekend and holidays.

The rule of thumb for success when confronted with tough musky fishing conditions such as cold fronts and severe weather shifts to downsize. While many anglers will turn to small gliders, rattle baits and the like, having a Rabid Squirrel on the ready can save the day when conditions take a turn for the worse. The small visual profile of the Rabid Squirrel presents sluggish muskies with a mere morsal of a snack after being drawn in by the dynamic thump of this lures Colorado blade / blades. The equation of small target plus big vibration equals muskies in the net when other anglers are left kicking rocks in frustration at the docks.

Another key component of the Rabid Squirrel is that lift and drag are greatly reduced with its minimalistic skirt allowing it to run deeper when compared to bucktails of the same length and blade configuration. This deeper average running depth closes the proximity gap between The Rabid Squirrel and sluggish muskies, which is a critical factor for success when conditions take a turn for the worse.

While the Rabid Squirrel clearly deserves a spot in your tackle box to save the day during tough conditions and overcome high angling pressure, don’t overlook this lure as an early season option. With its small profile and big thump, the Rabid Squirrel can coax post spawn muskies into action when other blade baits fail. The Rabid Squirrel is also a handy lure to have in your musky lure arsenal for those multi fish days on action waters where yet again its small visual profile and big thump turn follows into photos as multiple muskies will wind up in your net.

Whether you are facing high angling pressure, atrociously bad weather or are just looking for an alternative to plain jane bucktails the Rabid Squirrel from Musky Mayhem is a fantastic way to get more action when you hit the water.

Cheers,
