Muskie Fishing in Ultra Clear Water

Trolling can also be a great way to trick muskies into striking when fishing in gin clear waters because it is well known that clear water muskies often follow lures to the boat without striking! It is believed that one of the primary reasons muskies living in very clear waters follow so often is because they can see many of the imperfections in our muskie presentations. Trolling in clear waters can change these results because it is a tactic that allows you to position your DepthRaider far enough down where there is very little light penetration and by doing this, muskies must rely on their lateral line and sense of feel to eat, rather than their eyes. As water temperatures move from the mid-40’s down into the 30’s muskies will continue to eat heavily and prepare for their winter underneath the ice and this is THE time to score on a giant musky. But the cold brings on equipment issues. Freezing reels and fishing line, busted level winds and cold hands plague many anglers who try to continue casting in under these hardcore conditions. So trolling is one of the best ways to continue fishing during this time when the odds of putting a trophy of monstrous proportions in the net is the highest. Motor trolling allows you to cover an immense amount of structure in a relatively short period of time and you can keep your DR in the strike zone for the duration of your trolling pass. And with the addition of line-counter reels you can keep precise control of the depth that your lure is running at, which is especially important when trolling over open-water. In this video the Musky Mastery pro staff and I set out on a cold late-fall day day to chase trophy muskies by trolling jointed DepthRaiders and as I maneuvered over rocks on the breakline, Mike Richardson scores on a gorgeous fall fatty!
